Universe 101: Through the Eyes of a Student, Not a Professor

Hi, I’m Elif Su! I really love writing, but since this is my first blog post, I am very nervous and excited. Maybe this is not a “perfect” start, but anyway… let’s begin!

I am an Astronomy and Space Sciences student. I am still at the very beginning of my journey. Nowadays, my life is full of physics formulas, math problems, and sometimes computer code that I can’t figure out. I thought to myself, “Why not start a blog too?” and here I am.

Why am I here?

Years ago, I was listening to music and watching the stars one night. Suddenly, I saw a bright light moving in the sky. I thought it was a shooting star. At that moment, my astronomy adventure started (Later, I learned it wasn’t actually a star, but a meteor! :).

When I chose this major, many people criticized me. Some people even thought I would only interpret horoscopes! Because of this, I want to explain Astronomy — the mother of all sciences — to everyone. But I want to do this from a student’s perspective, not like a professor.

What is Astronomy, Really?

In my first year, I learned that astronomy is much more than just looking through a telescope. It is a hard science that uses physics and math to understand the universe.

In my classes, we don’t just talk about how beautiful stars are. We study To understand:

Physics: How stars are born and how they die.

Mathematics: How to calculate the distance between galaxies.

Programming: We use languages like Python to understand the data we get from space.

It is difficult, but it is also very exciting to see that the universe follows the rules of science. I want to be a cosmologist. Because I am really curious about the beginning and the ending of the universe. I think this profession is much more exciting. I also love deep space and pictures of deep space..

What will I share?

I am here to share my mistakes (there will be many!), my learning process, and my daily life as an astronomy student. I love learning new things, space, cats and writing. I am not an expert; I am just a student who loves to talk about what I learn. Sometimes it will be about a physics theory, sometimes about the history of space, or just my new experiences in life.

My main goal is to explain the universe through my eyes and also I want to show that science is for everyone. By sharing my story as a female student, I hope to inspire other girls and women to follow their curiosity. Let’s learn together and never stop looking at the stars!

I will archive everything I learn here. I tell myself, “Even if no one reads it, I can look back at it in the future,” but… it would be great to know that someone is with me on this journey. 🙂

I will share this exciting adventure with you from my own point of view; today as a student, and in the future, as an astronomer…
