First Time at an Observatory as an astronomy student.

I am a first-year Astronomy student . I waited seven years to say this! Now, I study at Erciyes University. A few days ago, I went to UZAYBİMER (Astronomical Observatory) for an observation night. It was my first time at an observatory as an astronomy student.
Usually, Kayseri(The city of Türkiye) is very cold. But that night, the weather was warm. Maybe I was just very excited, I don’t know! When I saw the white dome of the observatory, I said, "I am finally home." It was very quiet and peaceful. I was so happy.

But when I went inside, I felt a bit sad. There are only a few observatories in Türkiye, but UZAYBİMER is not in good condition. It is very old. Also, there are many new buildings around it. Their lights make it hard to see the stars. An observatory should be in a dark place, but here, there are city lights everywhere.
The most disappointing part was the condition of the radio telescope. Our department founder, Prof. Dr. İbrahim Küçük, frequently mentions the situation of the radio telescope in our Physics II lectures.
Unfortunately, a base station (cell tower) built nearby causes significant Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). This interference masks the weak astronomical signals coming from space, making the telescope functionally unusable for scientific research. This is a major loss for the scientific community.
I truly wish more importance was given to astronomy, the mother of all sciences, in our world.

Still, it was a great experience. There was live music and a great atmosphere. This time, I didn’t just look at the sky; I used the things I learned in my classes.
Everywhere I turned, everyone was talking about space. My friends were another reason why this experience was so great. Despite everything, I had a wonderful time.
This experience took me back seven years to the Kreiken Observatory in Ankara. It was a place surrounded by trees and completely isolated from the city. While Arctic Monkeys songs played quietly in the background, we listened to a first-hand talk about the exoplanet discovered by Prof. Dr. Mesut Yılmaz.
On that night, when I saw the Moon’s craters, Saturn’s rings, and Jupiter’s moons for the first time, I decided to choose this career path. Years later, it was wonderful to feel the same atmosphere at UZAYBİMER, despite all its problems.
Jupiter and Saturn were the same. But I was not the same person. I had grown from a child who dreamed of studying astronomy into the young student who is finally doing it.

Despite the light pollution, it was amazing to observe Venus, Jupiter, and the Moon that night. Whether you are interested in astronomy or not, you should definitely join a sky observation one day.
When you get away from the city noise and artificial lights and look up, you will find a piece of yourself in that dark sky.
We all love the stars and planets, but looking at them through a telescope lens is an indescribable experience. It reminds us that we are just tiny dots in the huge universe, and everything else loses its importance in front of this amazing beauty…
…Remember, the sky is always there and waiting for you in all its glory; just lift your head a little…
